All,

I was informed last night, by one of his daughters, that Dar had passed away on March the 30th. A dark day for many of us who will sorely miss his vast knowledge, critical mind, and wit. And it goes without saying that it is particularly a great loss to Palanth with which he had been closely associated since the beginning, in his efficient role as Moderator, Advisor, and major contributor.

Jacques

Addition

And this for people who like to put a face on a name. A picture of Dar, just received from his daughter.

Robert and Jacques:

I can only say that I just heard about Dar's passing this morning, and I'm still in a state of complete shock about it.  I learned a great deal from him, and I will miss his calm, knowledgeable presence greatly.

All,

I would personally like to welcome our most recent member, "laurenc", who happens to be one of Dar's three children. She's the one who informed me about Dar's passing. In her last email, she did note that she would'nt mind hearing from some of you about her father. By the way, her name is Lauren.

Another person you may want to contact is Jim Shipman (Dar's youngest brother), at Jim.Shipman@sbcglobal.net.

Thank you, Jacques, for posting the photo of Dar. Thanks especially to Lauren for first providing it and secondly giving permission for it to be posted. Dar was a highly valued member of various mailing lists, including  Paleoanthro. I have thoroughly enjoyed seven years of correspondence with Dar, a true gentleman. He and I exchanged many valuable correspondence and he had a way of analysing and summarising data which would have made any top scholar proud.

He has had an influence on my thinking. If it was not too late to make an addition, I would have included his name in the acknowledgements of a paper of mine which will shortly be coming out.

God speed, my friend.

I am so sorry to have lost Dar; he was an amazing and kind gentleman who helped me to clarify many of the paleoanthropological issues that came up on my site from time to time, and was always generous--more than generous--with his expertise. He is sorely missed.

Kris:

Dar will be sorely missed in many places.  I cannot tell you how helpful he was in pointing me to background reading(something which has become an ongoing project), for my writing.  I can, like the rest of us, only mourn his loss.

I am shocked and very sad that Dar has passed away. He always was an inspiration to me with his clear and profound attributions I could learn so much from. I am grateful to him for his warm and friendly mails when he wrote me about his bicycle-tours in Southern Germany in the 1950s.
My deepest sympathy to Lauren and Dar's family.
