Les civilisations préhistoriques d'Asie centrale: 1. Le Paléolithique de la rive occidentale du lac Baïkal,
by Valéry Sitlivy

The first signs of human habitation in the Siberian steppes dates from the Middle Pleistocene. Basing his study on excavations and geological surveys of sites at Mal'ta, Makarovo, Arembovsky and Irkoutsk, Sitlivy describes the plants and animals of Siberia and the artefacts that humans left behind: quartzite tools, ivory, bone and wood, primitive artwork, statuettes and jewellery. 82p, b/w figs, tbs (Gutenberg 1997)
Paperback. Price US $29.00

I have yet to see this, but it should definitely be of interest to anyone with a bent on northern Eurasian Palaeolithic human dispersals and adaptations.

Dear Jacques,

Of course I would be interested but I can't find this book or publishing company, (?Gutenberg), in a Google search.  Can you please provide information on where this short review of the Sitlevy book came from and is there ordering information available?

Just looking for the info. I thought that it was distributed by Oxbow <www.oxbowbooks.com/>, but when I tried to check this out (as well as a number of other things) the servers were unresponsive (timing out), apparently because of high traffic.

A review of the book in question has also been published in the Bull. 2, 2002 of the SPF (Société préhistorique française), by F. Djindjian, and, from what I have seen, it seems that the exact reference (authors and title) should read as follows:

SITLIVY V., MEDVEDEV G.I., LIPNINA E.A. (1997). Les civilisations préhistoriques d'Asie Centrale. 1. Le Paléolithique de la rive occidentale du lac Baïkal.

I’ll keep tracking it down, and may try to contact Djindjian
