Dear Forum Members,

Just a few words to point out that we have begun to inject some material in the Background & Complementary Information Board which has been designed to handle downloadable information files of various sorts (visuals, PDFs, etc.)

You can, now, have access to (1):

the TOCs  from the last five issues of Archaeology, Ethnology & Anthropology of Eurasia

Archaeology, Ethnology & Anthropology of Eurasia - TOCs - 01,
Archaeology, Ethnology & Anthropology of Eurasia - TOCs - 02,
Archaeology, Ethnology & Anthropology of Eurasia - TOCs - 03,
Archaeology, Ethnology & Anthropology of Eurasia - TOC s- 04, and
HERE

and (2):

the following paper kindly provided by Iain Davidson.

Davidson, Iain. 1999. Symbols by Nature: animal frequencies in the Upper Palaeolithic of western Europe and the nature of symbolic representation. Archaeology in Oceania 34:121-131.

More of the same will be added in the near future.

Needless to say, you are all invited to make use of this particular Board, both as "downloaders" and, hopefully, as providers of palaeoanthropologically pertinent, "copyright free" information.

Anyone interested in passing on such material, should send it to material@palanth.com, accompanied by appropriate comments. It will then be "posted" and all members will be informed.

Jacques,

If someone was to send you material for uploading, what's the lifespan of any uploaded article ?

Mike,

As far as I know, no time limit was specified when PALANTH got the server space from the UMM. But then, you never know! As is the case with many of those types of services, lack of space  always ends up being the big issue. For the time being, however,  I don't think this is a problem. So, you are certainly welcome to upload material that is palaeoanthropologically pertinent (sensu PALANTH -- which, as you know, is rather broad), as long as it is clearly "kosher" with regards to copyright.

Thanks for the clarification. What I'm currently thinking of is having the draft copy of my essay on my website for comment and then, providing you are interested afterwards, having the final finished copy both on my site and in palanth's archive.

Another thought of mine is what about providing links from that page to externally available .pdf journals articles which have been made freely available. An example of this would be McBrearty & Brook's December 2000 JHE article "The revolution that wasn't" on the origins of modern human behaviour : http://www.hss.caltech.edu/~steve/files/mcbrearty.pdf ?

Well, as far as I can tell, information regarding most (if not all) of the "free" material I have had the opportunity to find or to be told about. has been relayed to the Forum, in one way or another.

The "Background & Complementary Information" Board has been created in order to facilitate the dissemination of a wide range of visual and/or textual info which requires a fair bit of space and which cannot be readily placed in the other Forum Boards. The AEAE TOCs and Iain Davidson paper are examples of what I am talking about. It is also to be used, as the name indicates, to provide complementary/supplementary info for papers to be published in the long awaited (!) PALANTH Journal. For the time being -- and until it is fully tested, I would like to keep it that way.

This said, I have no problem with using this particular Board as a host/mirror for palaeoanthropologically pertinent info (Iain's paper is an example) that does not emanate from PALANTH.

May I inquire as to the progress of the journal and a revised publication date ?

Yes, you may. The answer is as soon as I will have been completely fixed up. Shortly, I hope.
