Just FYI, there's a nice piece on the John Hawks blog about the origin of the Levallois technique and why it more or less succeeded handaxes.  The ideas are interesting, if nothing else.

Hawks has collected his thoughts HERE, but  he concludes with: 

"...So we need a hypothesis that draws in as many disparate observations as possible.  After all this meandering thought, I think I may have one.  We'll have to see if it works out..."

To me, this says Hawks is not finished with the subject, and perhaps will elaborate the hypothesis he "may have" to "see if it works out."

Dar and all:

I pretty much read the Hawks blog every day.  I will let you know of any further interesting developments.  BTW, and this is to the rest of the forum, you might do well to check this blog from time to time.  Hawks covers a variety of PA related subjects, not all of which would necessarily fit onto this list, but he's worth reading anyway, because of his breadth of interests, and also because he's just plain *funny* at times.
